1. The words Bush used in the state of
the union address
2. Syria is still on the radar screen
3. Bush's economic black hole
4. A little hope from Tom Hayden
5. A new piece from Arundhati Roy, woman
activist from India
6. As if the human toll of war isn't bad
enough....
****************
1. Check out this writer's analysis of
the actual words used by Bush in the first part of the address. Do
you believe in subliminal messages?
2. UPI reports that the US may use air
strikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, in an area where Syrian troops
are deployed.
Related to this, a top Republican in the
Senate is still making noises about Iraq's WMDs being in Syrian,
while Colin Powell is saying there is no hard evidence of this and
it would not have been to Syria's advantage to hid them.
3. This is a pretty depressing analysis
of economic trends - talks about impact on average worker's actual
income and how that is decreasing, which of course has a rippling
effect throughout the economy. Another slant on what is going on
with economic globalization.
4. Tom Hayden talks about the Global
Peace Movement and the World Social Forums in a pretty hopeful way.
5. Roy's speech from the opening of the
World Social Forum in India on Jan 16. She paints a stark picture
and outlines what she thinks must be done if we really want to make
a difference.
6. This piece on the environmental
impact of the US military and our wars is just sickening.
